The glacial eelpout (Lycodes frigidus) is one of the largest eelpouts and lives at great depths in ice-cold water. It has a long, eel-like body with the rear part clearly longer than the front, and a broad, flattened head. As is typical for eelpouts, the dorsal, tail and anal fins merge into one continuous fin. It can grow to about 70 cm. The species is found in the central Arctic basin and in the deep, cold parts of the Norwegian Sea, where it also breeds. It stays close to the bottom at roughly 500 to 3,000 m, in water of around minus one to minus two degrees. Its diet consists of bottom animals such as shrimps, amphipods, isopods, brittle stars and squid, and it also eats fish. Anglers will never meet this true deep-sea fish. Knowledge of the population is limited. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
